Reviews:

"The intriguingly-named Jakarta Skyscraper's self-titled ep (Tart Garage) is 7 slices of decidedly moody and introspective garage rock. The minimal instrumentation - just guitar, percussion and random violin scrapings - allows lead singer Denise Bonis to emote freely, which she does to great effect. Dark, jagged music for dark, jagged emotions. I like it. You must visit www.jakartaskyscraper.com "

"Denise Bonis and Eric Forst are the vocalists for Jakarta Skyscraper, and also two-thirds of its whole. Drummer Mark Mastopietro completes the trio, and he grabs the spotlight on track one, but not in the way you might think. No fancy solo, no showy polyrhythm from Mastopietro; but rather a discordant beat that sounds something akin to a yeti plodding his way home through three feet of packed snow. The off-kilter cadence is oddly alluring, so much so that it takes a few listens to be able to focus on Bonis' vocals. It's her show until half way through the third song, "These Guitars," where Forst adds his dulcet tones. That tune is just a warm-up, though, for the disc's highlight, "Stars are Down," where both singers ride a magic carpet that soars and dips through clouds of incense, building to multiple crescendos before gently floating back to earth. Bonis plays the violin on the song and that combined with the way the duo sing with delicate urgency puts them on par with the sublime work of David and Linda LaFlamme of "It's A Beautiful Day". The similarly dreamy "Railroad Gin" closes this impressive release. "

"Jakarta Skyscraper makes good use of the dissonant minor chords...and I love it.

'Open Gates' has a bit of a messy feeling to it. There's some percussive element that adds an odd but cool layer to it.

'These Guitars' is a slow sleepy dirgy track that is good for chilling.

The instrumental track, 'Jakarta' has an Indian flavor to it and is quite nice.

The vocals, when present are a good match for the music and don't overpower it but add another subtle layer.

This is an odd but nice recording that will appeal to folks who like their music slow and easy."
